Her Conference: Day 2

I am currently sitting on the fast ferry on my way back from an amazing weekend spent in NYC! I’ve taken a 7 hour bus ride prior and spent probably one too many dollars on this trip, but I don’t regret any of it. So here is a recap of my day two at Her Conference.

The day started with our morning keynote speaker (well after breakfast and two cups of Starbucks coffee, of course). The morning keynote was Vanessa K. De Luca who is the current editor-in-chief of Essence magazine. Her speech was focused on her ten secrets for success, which I will in return share with you.

  1. Know what you stand for and what you don’t.
  2. Don’t rest on your laurels. Here, she went a little bit more in depth as to why. She explained that “comfort makes you fat”, it makes you lazy. You want to always be thinking differently and being innovative.
  3. Believe in the power of failure. She applied for her current position at Essence multiple times and did not get it until about the third time. She said that she asked for feedback and options. She was told that she wasn’t ready for the position, so she asked, “if I’m not ready, how do I get ready?” And here she is today.
  4. Trust your inner compass, even when the naysayers don’t.
  5. Take the risk that takes you somewhere new.
  6. Look back- but only to see how far you’ve come. She said that you can only make mistakes, if you learn from them and become better because of them.
  7. Don’t be afraid to do the unexpected.
  8. Remain humble- but let ’em know. Her best advice for this section was to “give credit, more than you take credit”.
  9. Never stop learning because it gives you courage. She said to repeat this, “I know what I know and you can’t take that away from me” and that your education will always take you far as long as you never stop learning.
  10. A winner never quits and a quitter never wins.

In the Q&A section, she said that her biggest regret when she was our age was overthinking. Her biggest piece of advice to all of us college aged women is to not worry and overthink and to surround ourselves with people who will lift you.

Next, I went to two panels. One on social media and one on entrepreneurship. The social media panel was absolutely amazing. You will be hearing more about that in a later post! And the entrepreneurship one wasn’t my favorite. The two biggest pieces of advice I got from it was “don’t solve problems that don’t exist” and “people will second guess you because you’re young, people will second guess you because you’re a woman. That means you have to walk in that much more prepared”.

Our afternoon keynote was the famous Nastia Liukin. Nastia is an Olympic winning gymnast and author. Her opening advice was “be the best you that you can be” because that’s what she did at all times. When people lost sight of her when she got injured, she belived in herself and focused on her dream and she got her dream. The book “the Secret” helped her push through and her mom who would never let her quit on a bad day. She talked a decent amount on having a positive mindset. You need a positive mindset in order to achieve and to get through your bad days. Your bad days are the days that make you stronger. Later in her life, she decided to try and go to the olympics again, just to know that she tried. While competing, she fell on her face while on the bars. It took everything she had to get back up off her face and finish her routine and she did. When she finished, she received her first standing ovation by 20,000 people. When she won the olympics, she didn’t even receive one, but when she, being a gold medal Olympian, fell on her face in the middle of competition for the first time and still got up and finished her routine she finally got it. She had so much great advice to say to all of us and she was truly one of the most inspiring women at the conference.

Next was lunch followed by our workshops. I chose the “Speak Up:How to advocate for yourself to launch the career you want” with Tory. This the most helpful workshop I had attended and Tory was incredible. She helped women in the room with personal situations when it comes to their career. She told us to never email someone we look up to and ask them to coffee because “let’s be honest, we can buy our own coffee”. Instead, ask them what would be the most convient way to have a moment of their time”. You want to ask  three questions that you can take away. One, what is one key take-away to apply to your life? Two, who is one person you would suggest I meet to help me towards my goal? Three, what are three pieces of advice to help me to get to my goal? And you have to admit, these are probably questions you already had for them that you just didn’t think about. It was incredible.

Our very last keynote was Ambassador Samantha Power. Now, as many of you know, I’m not a big politics person so her speech, while informative and very well done, wasn’t really for me. I did pull three main pieces of advice from it through. One, it is hard to achieve goals at broad. You sometimes have to narrow things down so you have more specific goals. You can’t change the world, but you can change something like global warming or poverty in the US. Two, “know something about something”. Simple as that. Three, pick a cause and use your “sliver of the world” to solve it.

The second and last day was ended after a few raffles and I left feeling changed. My night was not over yet. I continued on to meet my cousin on the other side of the financial district where we caught sail and boy was that the end to the most amazing weekend.
